My vet called and told me a women wanted to put her 15yr old Maltese to sleep, because they are moving to a new house and the husband will not let her take the dog with them. He doesn't want the dog peeing....in the new house.
Dr. Davis didn't want to put a dog down that is still healthy, Her name is Skittles, she is 15 years old, and weighs about 5.5 lbs, and very skinny, she should be about 8 lbs. When I went to pick Skittles up the owner told me they kept her
in a crate all day, and only feed her at night, so she wouldn't poop so much. They only fed her hard food, which she couldn't eat very well, since her teeth were very bad. I had her checked out by the vet; she had a urinary tract infection, which cleared up with antibiotics. No wonder she peed in the house. She only peed in our house the first 2 days, and after that she always used the doggie door to go outside and do her business. But there were times when she had to poop, but was running to the doggie door to go out, but just didn't make it in time. She was such a good girl.
She had become my Velcro dog. The first weekend we had her, while making the weekly doggie food, she stood by my foot for almost 3hrs. She was always the first to get up with me in the morning and would get up with me in the middle of the night. Every night before bed, she would lick my hands. She didn't like to be held, but loved to be near you. She even liked to play some, for being such an old girl. Those back legs didn't work very good, but she liked to be chased and chased me back.
For an older dog, she is active, she moves slowly, but will run after me if I get to far ahead of her as I'm doing things in the house. She really liked to walk and smell all the smells in the backyard. Skittles must have been hard of hearing and was always startled when she didn't see you coming. She would go to the front door and bark and greet me with all the other dogs when I would get home from work.
She was in kidney failure; she had good and bad days. The last few days, she has been pretty out of it, not coming to greet me or giving any kisses. Even to the end, she is up moving around some, trying to stay close to me. We had to force feed her for over a week, and taking her to the vet for sub-Q fluids, but this didn't seem to help very much.

Today we had to put Skittles to sleep. I know in my heart it wasn't time, but in my head I knew it was. She's now wrapped in an angel's arm, being loved and cared for. She was such a trooper, even to the end. She will be missed dearly, she was my shadow. She was with us only for 5 months, but she was loved like she had been here her whole life and gave so much love in return.
